GECU Celebrates Freedom and Community at Pop Goes the Fort

There’s nothing quite like celebrating Independence Day under the wide-open West Texas sky, surrounded by the sounds of music, laughter, and fireworks. On Saturday, June 28, GECU was one of the proud sponsors of Pop Goes the Fort at Biggs Park in Fort Bliss, Texas — an annual Fourth of July celebration that brings military families, El Pasoans, and visitors together for an unforgettable evening to celebrate the founding of our nation.

Hosted on one of the nation’s most historic military installations, Pop Goes the Fort is more than just an event — it’s a heartfelt tribute to the military service members who serve our country, and a joyful gathering for the entire community. Attendees were treated to a lively mix of entertainment, delicious eats from local food trucks, free patriotic light-up glow merchandise for the kids, and a festive atmosphere that made this year’s celebration one for the books.

The night kicked off with a high-energy performance from the 1st Armored Division Band, whose stirring renditions of classic favorites set the tone for an evening of celebration and gratitude. Up next, Free Daps delivered their unique hip-hop improv performance that got the crowd dancing and moving. And to cap it all off, ’90s rock icons Sugar Ray took the stage, bringing the energy, nostalgia, and smooth hits that had everyone singing along.

As a designated Purple Heart Credit Union, GECU is committed to honoring and supporting our military and Veteran communities. Fort Bliss is El Paso and El Paso is Fort Bliss. That’s why events like Pop Goes the Fort hold such a special place in our hearts. We were honored to connect with attendees through fun giveaways, exciting activities, and a visit from our beloved mascot, Dru Blue — who was met with smiles, high-fives, and plenty of photo ops throughout the night.

The celebration reached its grand finale with a dazzling fireworks display that lit up the night sky. With music echoing across the park and families gathered on blankets and lawn chairs, it was a perfect reminder of the freedoms we cherish and those who defend them.
